Venmo Scam – Scammers Attempt to Fool Users with Innocuous Payments
A Venmo user shared his recent experience of a subtle, albeit suspicious, scam that had to do with receiving an unexpected payment from an unknown individual. According to the user, the $30 payment was sent by an unknown stranger, with the note “golf” attached to the transaction.
A little while later, the sender messaged the user about how the payment was a mistake and requested the user to return the money. Being aware of this tactic from discussing it in the subreddit /scams, the user chose not to pay it back and advised the sender instead to take it up with their bank or with Venmo support instead.
Low-Value, High-Frequency Scams on the Rise
The amount was small, but the user said these scams are very easy traps for unsuspecting individuals. Scammers tend to use insignificantly small amounts so as not to raise suspicion and rely on the recipient’s goodwill.
Warning to Others
Promptly, the user informed their family about the occurrence to put it into more immediate attention. The case is a reminder to always double-check unknown payments and refrain from transferring funds directly to strangers, even after their request may appear credible.
