The user has posted on Tinder about the experience of almost getting caught in online romance scams. This announcement worries whether the scams have progressed too much. A source, whose identity the user would not reveal, said he was being targeted by someone who seemed very real.
Describing the match as having a steady online presence with realistic photographs, and even video calls, it gave no immediate signs of a scam. The user stated, “The pictures didn’t show up on reverse image search, and I didn’t spot any AI traces on the videos. It looked like a normal person having a video call over a phone.”
But the moments of red flags were creeping out from this almost real interaction. At times, the scammer’s messages would boast odd sentence constructions, while the ones sent by him were vague when it came to sharing about his own life.
When it came time for the scam to turn, the scammer abruptly entered into a discussion about investment in cryptocurrency assets, claiming that he made awesome profits on day trading. The user caught the hunch and quickly blocked and reported the profile.
It didn’t financially hurt, but it did make things a little discomforting. The user also cautioned others to be careful with this type of deception because romance scams these days grow increasingly sophisticated, making them harder to spot early on. “This was a wake-up call,” they said. “Stay safe out there.”
